Virtual Cluster using VirtualBox

I tested the new HPC Europa Milestone 6 DVD and created a virtual cluster using VirtualBox on my laptop. I created a head-node and two computing nodes connected via a VLAN. The head node has two network interfaces, NAT which enables the connection to the outside world and an internal virtual interface. The two computing nodes have only one network interface each for the VLAN.

In picture number two a PBS job executing a simple MPI task is demonstrated. The head node is on the left and the two computing nodes are on the right.

My general impression is that this Virtual Cluster is an excellent tool for education where the teacher and later on the students can experience Parallel Processing using their own laptops fairly easily.

Globus Provision

I tested globus-provision which is an easy way to have a globus+condor cluster ready for number crunching on Amazon’s EC2 cloud.
My front end was my laptop which runs Windows. Python on Windows does not behave exactly as on Linux when it comes to SIGINT and therefore os.fork() generated an error message. Thanks to the support of Borja Sotomayor the SIGINT issues has resolved and the solution was to by-pass the SIGINT so I could proceed with the test. I tried the example from: http://globus.org/provision/guide_compute_go.html#guide-compute-go
I decided not to use globusonline for the eBooks transfer and I used wget instead.

The End of Supercomputers As We Know Them Today

About four years ago I predicted in this blog the fall of Grid Computing and the rise of Cloud Computing ( http://telzur.blogspot.com/2007/10/end-of-grid-computing.html )
Now I want to claim that Supercomputers as we know them today will not be the kind we will see in the future.
I think that within a couple of years:
1. Most supercomputers will shift to the cloud (HPC Cloud).
2. The governance of X86 is not guaranteed: We already see the rise of GPGPUs and we will see more families of technologies being involved, e.g. Tegra and ARM, Reconfigureable Computing (RC) i.e. FPGAs, etc'.
3. Supercomputers won't be anymore General Purpose machines. They will be reconstructed as a Cloud Service (Supercomputing as a Service) from all the available technologies (see previous section) per single mission (program) in order to maximize the performance and minimize the consumed energy and cost. I decided to use the word mission because the word task is usually reserved for a thread inside a program. Also the network topology will be ad-hoc (fully non-blocking, partially blocking, hyper-cube,....) and the user will be able to select from a few options the interconnect kind (Infiniband, 10GigE, ...).

I decided to test it myself, read below.

1. Registration
Very easy and quick!

2. Setup
I used a Linux desktop (dream linux). I needed to install first Python´s ¨easy-install¨ which was missing.

about deploying a basic WWW server.

5. Verification
I opened the URL and got, as expected, the ¨Hello World!¨ from the cloud virtual web server. If you own a domain name you can forward it to point to this URL and you are done.

6. Conclusions
6.1 Very cool and a nice game for the afternoon to experience the power of the cloud.
6.2 I confirmed how easy it is to deploy a webserver as dotcloud had promised
6.3 There are still many open questions about how mature is this solution for real heavy, scalable and secured web services.
6.4 It will be interesting to follow dotcloud and see how they evolve.

When introducing Cloud Computing (CC) people usually like to emphasize the similarities between Electric Power Grids (EPG) and CC.
These analogies include: On demand service, Pay-Per-Use (PPU) model, the Elasticity of the resources, load balancing and even water cooling,
After the Amazon EC2 service disruption on April 21^st, 2011, we can identify more similarities between EPG and CC in disasters related issues. These similarities include:
1. A global damage (with immediate and delayed components).
2. Uncontrolled behavior of the resources (neutron population vs. loss of connectivity or fuel rods meltdown vs. failing servers).
3. During the crisis, similar announcements to the public which minimize the catastrophe.
4. After the crisis, publication of the event investigation in length.
5. Loss of confidence in the technology by the users.

Testing Intel’s Parallel Studio

Part 1 – OpenMP

Intel claims to bring simplified “end-to-end parallelism to Microsoft Visual Studio C/C++ developers with Intel® Parallel Studio” [1].

I used a simple OpenMP parallel HelloWorld program to study this new tool which comes as an add-on to Visual Studio 2008.The program listing is enclosed in Figure 1.

After compiling the code I tested it with the Parallel Amplifier (Profiler).

My machine has two physical cores and since it uses hyper-threading it looks as if it has 4 cores. I executed the program with 4 threads. In Figure 2 a screen dump of the profiler is shown.

In Figure 3 we can see that there were 4 threads on 4 cores and the performance was optimal.

I would however recommend everyone to repeat every execution several times since there is a large variability between runs and taking average results might be a good idea.

Focusing now on the center of the Visual Studio screen, Figure 4,

one can see the actual profiler analysis which points to the bottleneck in the code, i.e. the function consume() in this case.

Of course there is a lot to go deeper but as a first impression Parallel Amplifier can be helpful for OpenMP applications (and TBB too). Now let’s see what about MPI.

Part 2 – MPI

Originally MPI was created for Distributed Memory systems but MPI can also be used on a single (SMP) machine, like OpenMP, by using multiple threads. I installed both MPICH2 and Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK on my computer.

Both can be set inside Visual Studio [2]. MPI programs, by default, are being executed using mpiexec executable.

There is no problem to compile the code with Visual Studio and to run it from the command line, but this way Parallel Studio won’t be useful. Therefore, one must execute the program from inside Visual Studio. This is doable. One should insert the mpiexec and the number of processes, e.g. –n 4 to the right place in the project properties, see Figure 5.

But here is the catch: since mpiexec is already compiled, its source is not given and in addition it is not part of the built (project), Parallel Amplifier can not analyze the user program and it only “sees” the mpiexec and therefore it only reports about mpiexec cpu consumption, see Figure 6.

Therefore unless mpiexec will somehow be skipped by Parallel Studio it looks that this tool can not help much to analyze MPI applications!

Nvidia Nsight Installation Failed

I have a Windows 7 (64bits) OS with Visual Studio 2008 with SP1.
After starting Parallel_Nsight_Host_Win64_1.0.10200 (Jul 2010) I got the following error message: “The required version of Visual Studio (2008 SP1) was not detected” – see screen capture:

I guess the problem is in the system registry of VS2008 which partly located as a 32bit system and partly as a 64bit system and Nsight didn’t find what it expected.

SP1 seems to be installed as can be seen in the image below:

It turned out that although SP1 is installed, it was not installed correctly.

After trying to reinstall SP1 I got the following error message:

Assuming the host OS is Windows and the guest OS is Linux (CentOS in my case):
make a directory at the guest OS for the flash storage:
mkdir /home/telzur/shared
Plug the memory stick and check the guest OS log:
tail /var/log/messages
find the name of the new device, in my case, ./dev/sdb1
as root:
mount –t vfat /dev/sdb1 /home/telzur/shared
Your files are now in the shared folder.

Parallel Computing with Python and MPI

I installed PyMPI (version 2.5b0) on my CentOS 5.5 (as a VirtualBox guest system).
The following short demo works:

Before installing PyMPI I installed these packages:
1. MPICH2
2. Python-develop

Installation of PyMPI:
1. ./configure --with-includes=-I/usr/local/include
2. make
3. make check
4. make install (as root)

A day with my laptop

When I came in the morning to work on my laptop I discovered that it had restarted due to some critical updates by Microsoft. One hour later iTunes opened a pop-up window and asked me to install a new version. So I allowed it. Tons of megabytes were downloaded and network became slow. Then, The AVG Anti-Virus had updated its Definition Table. I like when this happens, it gives me a good feeling that my laptop is well taken care, but then also appeared a notification about a serious patch which required a restart. OK, I confirmed that. At noon, Firefox installed a new version and requested a permission to restart as well, So I confirmed that too. Then, a few of my favorites plug-ins had stopped working because they were not compatible anymore with the new version of Firefox. Just then, without any correlation, the USB driver hung and the mouse was dead. so I gave up the mouse and continued to work with the touch pad. Then, the computer was slow. I got angry and opened the Task Manager to see what is going on. Firefox consumed 800MB and tens of other processes filled the whole memory, so I started to kill a few. My ThinkPad is full of utilities by Lenovo. Nevertheless several processes were restarted because other mysterious processes keep an eye on them. Then, explorer died. OK, I am used to that so I restarted it manually. Then, I was told that there are unused icons on my desktop. Whenever I see this message I know that something really bad is going to happen. Never follow this advice. So I ignored it. OK, now everything seemed to be stable, I went to bring coffee, but when I returned to my computer there was a Javascript error and the browser asked me if I want to wait more or to stop it. Needless to say, I didn't know what to choose so I randomly selected to kill it. Silence. Firefox was Not Responding. I thought to myself that at this point nothing could be better than to restart the machine again. So I restarted to computer. Ten more minutes were lost while it was trying to boot. Finally it came back. I happily opened Word and started to work. When I wanted to print my document nothing happened. The printer spooler had died. Finally I got the point; I need to buy a new laptop.

Firefox 3.6 beta is still buggy

My Firefox version 3.6.4 is eating a lot of memory and the longer it is kept open the more memory it consumes, probably a memory leak somewhere. It seems that the blame is on the Plug-ins with their buggy JavaScript codes. Any how the user experience is not as expected.

Title:

High performance computing needs for Numerical Weather Prediction

Abstract:Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) uses current weather conditions as input into Mathematical models of the atmosphere to predict the weather. Richardson wrote the differential equations for NWP at 1922. He also calculated that if there was a "forecasting factory", 64,000 people will be needed to solve the equations and produce a forecast for the next day.

It wasn't until the advent of the computer and computer simulation that it was feasible to do NWP in real-time. Manipulating the huge datasets and performing the complex calculations necessary to do this on a resolution fine enough to make the results useful requires the use of some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.

At 1963 Lorenz discovered that small changes in initial conditions produced large changes in the long-term outcome. Lorenz's discovery was the base of the Chaos theory and proved NWP could not reasonably predict weather beyond a weekly period. The development of parallel computing opened the opportunity to run numerous runs with different initial conditions. These ensemble models define the forecast uncertainty and extend weather forecasting farther into the future than would otherwise be possible.

ScaleMP (Benzi Galili, Executive Vice President)SMP machines (shared memory, symmetric multi-processor) are still required for several classes of HPC workloads, mainly for use of very large (>0.5TB) RAM and also for high-core counts. In the past, building SMPs required tens to hundreds of millions of ongoing project investments for custom-chipsets, and in many cases involved custom-everything (CPUs, interconnect, chipset, OS, and software stacks) – making this type of technology cost-prohibitive for many science and engineering organizations. Past commercial attempts at creating software-based SMP (a.k.a Software-DSM) have failed. ScaleMP uses a novel virtualization-based approach, taking advantage of high bandwidth commodity interconnect and high-performance standard (x86) processors, to create SMPs that perform better for HPC workloads, and cost significantly less than the hardware-only alternatives. This session will describe the types of workloads that benefit from the architecture (including use cases around the world), and some of the basic ideas behind the architecture.

Three usage classes will be discussed: classic SMP, HPC cluster simplification, and Cloud/Grid oriented SMP “on-demand” services.

Description

Cloud computing is increasingly being used for what was known as "on-demand" and "utility computing". The services provided, the APIs and the applications that can be hosted by these Cloud providers have superseded the use of the grid, and are increasingly becoming popular with users. The Cloud is a paradigm shift, where details are abstracted from the users; they no longer need expert knowledge about using the various technologies and running their applications on service infrastructure. Cloud computing provides a consumption and delivery model for IT services based on Internet, and it typically involves the provision of dynamically scalable and virtualized services.

There services that are provided by various Cloud providers, which include commercial entities, such as Amazon and Google, as well as those that are open-source systems, such as provided by Open Cirrus and Eucalyptus.

In this workshop we will examine and explore the services, interfaces and types of applications that can be executed on Cloud systems. In addition, we are interested in the interfaces used to access the underlying services, the pros¢ons of using virtualization, the range and scope of applications that can be executed, the security used by these services, and aspects such a service level agreements and quality of service provided. In addition, we are keen to know about the services that are used, and whether these are appropriate for various types of applications, such as sophisticated workflows and HPC.

I saw lots of traffic in the Internet dealing with the question if it possible to upgrade Canon PowerShot S3 IS memory card beyond 2GB.

I can report, from my personal experience, that this camera accepts and works well with SanDisk SDHC 4GB card. The exact product packing is shown in the photo below (which is in low quality because it was taken by my cellular phone :) )

QPACE is a massively parallel architecture, allowing a single application to run on thousands of nodes. Individual nodes consist of a PowerXCell 8i processor and an FPGA that functions as network coprocessor. The nodes are connected in a 3-dimensional torus. The target application is quantum chromodynamics (QCD, thus the name QPACE = QCD parallel computing on the Cell), but the machine is also suitable for other mesh-based applications. There are many ways to use MPI. In this post I show how to install and use the DeinoMPI implementation which looks very cool and is free.

Part 4: A little-bit Mathematics

The integration in cpi.c is done for f(x)=1/(1+x**2) between 0 to 1.
It is nice to replace this function by f(x)=sqrt(1-x**2) also between 0 to 1 (the unit circle).
Strangely enough, integration of either of these functions between 0 to 1 is equal to Pi/4.
The Sage Symbolic Mathematics tool is a good way to show the difference between the two functions:

I am trying to test a fresh installation of MPICH2 (version 1.2) on Vista32
and get the following errors:

ClusterLogic (www.clusterlogic.net) specializes in providing advanced solutions for HPC Linux clusters. In this talk we will present two of our products, aimed at making the task of cluster management and monitoring easier:

CLiP
CLiP is a Cluster Installation and Management system which enables the rapid installation of diskless (and diskfull) clients. It is very flexible and enables the administrator to setup multiple desired configuration with only a few clicks.
The client nodes boot using the desired configuration and in a few minutes the cluster is ready for use.

In this talk we will perform a live demonstration of CLiP.

Infod

Infod is a gossip based information dissemination system, designed to give a robust cluster-wide information exchange platform. Nodes running this system routinely exchange information with other (randomly selected) nodes in the cluster. The outcome is that each node maintains a partial (or full) view of the cluster. This view can be used for
load balancing or monitoring and is constantly updated.

In the talk we will present the concepts behind the system and a live demonstration of the system will be performed.

Introduction to Reconfigurable Computing

Abstract:

Reconfigurable computing is a paradigm which combines the flexibility of software with the high performance of hardware. Recently we see more and more FPGAs in High Performance Computing. Problems which were previously solved by either software or custom hardware machines are now done by hybrid reconfigurable systems. In this talk I will introduce FPGAs, present their architecture, their programming tools and design process. I will present commercial hybrid systems which combine reconfigurable components with traditional clusters. I will present High-Level Synthesis, which is a method for programming reconfigurable devices using high languages such as C. I will present several reconfigurable applications and compare their performance with traditional cluster implementations.

This meeting will showcase NVIDIA library implementing various performance primitives on the GPU for various purposes, from image/video processing to other tasks.

The library can be considered as the GPU equivalent of Intel IPP, although with functionality that is added with time.

In the meeting we will overview the set of supported functions, test and discuss performance topics with regard to the GPU.

Using this library, users can experience between x10 to x50 performance increases when compared to running on the CPU.

This meeting will be followed by another, discussing upcoming LAPACK library implementation on the GPU.

In this post I will show step by step how to install and execute MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel programs in the .NET environment.

1) Installation:
My computer is running Windows Vista and Visual Studio 2008 is already installed.
Download and install the HPC Pack 2008 (next 5 figures):

Then install the MPI.NET SDK.msi (see next 4 figures):

2) Test the installation from the command line (next 3 figures):

…So Distributed Computing exhibits Quantum and not Classical behavior :)

Abstract

Intel Threading tools, Thread Profiler and Thread Checker, allow performing correctness and performance checking on multi-threaded applications running on multicore systems. The parallelization method may be based on POSIX, Windows Threads, or on OpenMP.

Thread Profiler is the tool which identifies bottlenecks that limit the parallel performance of your multi-threaded application, locates synchronization delays, stalled threads, excessive blocking time, and ineffective utilization of processors. It helps to find the best sections of code to optimize for sequential performance and for threaded performance, and compares scalability across different numbers of processors or using different threading methods.

Thread Checker is the tool which identifies and locates threading issues. Very often, concurrency problems (data races and deadlocks) are overlooked by the user during the parallelization process. This tool reliably identifies all problems of this kind; under the right conditions it is also possible to specify the exact location in the source code where things go wrong.

The talk is a pure live technology demonstration.

Programming for the GPU architecture and multi-core platforms can be a difficult task. Sometimes it prevents from good utilization of the platform and even programmers entering this field.

For the aid of programmers, automatic tools can simplify most of the work: providing vectorization, parallelism and better register usage of the output.

HMPP Workbench is a framework developed by CAPS Enterprises to help programmers make effective use of multi-core architectures, including the CPU, GPU and other accelerators (FPGA, etc.).

HMPP provides compiler support for both C and FORTRAN environments.

The meeting will present the features of HMPP, including a live demonstration of porting an algorithm to multi-core and GPU environments.

First impression of Windows-7 beta

I installed Windows-7 beta as a guest operating system of the SUN xVM on my Lenovo T-61 running Vista . The installation went smoothly although it required most of the available memory. A screen shot is enclosed.

From reasons which I still don’t understand the network interface was not detected, so surfing the Internet was not possible during this test! (I have network connection when I run Suse 11 as a xVM client).

While everyone look to the sky these days for Cloud Computing, Microsoft preferred to dive into the sea and to display a fish at the center of the desktop. Strange.

I can’t say anything yet about stability and performance but my first impression is of a deja vu; More of the Same.

Suse and Ubuntu are still my favorites.

We shall see.

Especially in the area of High-Performance Computing (HPC) users can entertain a combination of different hardware and software parallel architectures and programming environments. Those technologies range from vectorization and SIMD computation over shared memory multi-threading (e.g. OpenMP) to distributed memory message passing (e.g. MPI) on cluster systems. But it also puts more and more demand on software (development) tools for parallel computing in respect to the various challenges and opportunities. This talk will briefly outline major hardware architectural trends in HPC (including multi-core) and its associated parallel software tools. We will cover the respective Intel® Software Tools for the main phases of parallel software development: implementation, correctness, analysis and performance. VPN over Cellular

I like my Nokia 6210 Navigator, I use it to connect securely via VPN to the Ben-Gurion University domain when I am out of office. Below are two pictures that show how it works.

I connect the phone via a USB cable (Bluetooth is also possible), then I use the Nokia PC-Suite to connect to the Internet while the mobile phone acts as a MODEM.

I then use the VPN (RSA SecurID) to connect to the campus.

Two comments:

1) To make the test fully reliable the WiFi was completely switched-off using the airplane mode button located at the front of my T61 ThinkPad notebook.

2) I wrote this post using the new Microsoft Live Writer Beta – a multi-blog- editor which I find useful.

I have serious doubts how one can do serious Multi-Physics simulations without serious Parallel Processing capabilities. The current version, 3.5, of Comsol has no Distributed Parallel Processing support, e.g. MPI and a limited Multi-Core support but not at the user level; No Parallel Computing commands and no external Parallel Tools like Star-P. This limits the problem size that can be simulated.
However, for sure it is an excellent tool for education.

Abstract

Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) is a C++ template library aiming for developing parallel applications running on top of multi-core processors. The library consists of building blocks (data structures and algorithms) that free a programmer from some complications arising from the use of native threading mechanisms such as threads creation, synchronization, and termination. TBB abstracts access to the multiple processors by automating the process of data decomposition to small cache-friendly chunks of data called "tasks", and then schedules them to individual cores dynamically in an efficient manner. This approach enables the programmer to focus in the program logic rather than in the ways to optimize the program to the underlying machine architecture.

Next time you will need computing resources, e.g. a web server, get it from the cloud, it is simple and easy!
This post is not meant to be a full tutorial but only a brief description of my own personal experience playing with Amazon EC2.
For more complete information about working with Amazon EC2 check this or this references or browse here for additional documentation

Step 1: Create an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) account. Pricing and additional information is available here.
Step 2: Download the Amazon command line API tools and/or install the Elasticfox - Firefox plug-in.
Step 3: Set the security keys to allow SSH.
Step 4: Configure the Elasticfox (for example open port 22 for SSH and port 80 for http in my case).
Step 5. I used one of the pre-configured Amazon Machine Images (AMI), therefore starting the machine was immediate.
Step 6: Enjoy the new virtual machine - see screen shots below:

Cloud Computing at its best!

Basic price is $0.1/hour ($2.4/day or $876/year) - Not bad if you take into account the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) - No worries about up-time (UPS) - [that remains to be seen - there were a few unpleasant surprises], backup, cooling, space, electric bills....

Outlook:
Easy user interface together with a reasonable security and cost effectiveness will make Cloud Computing a serious alternative to local data centers in organizations.

How to securely connect to the BGU from Linux

Step 1: VPN access:
Install CheckPoint SNX VPN tool (SSL Network eXtender) for Linux.
( the current version I installed works with OpenSuse 10.3 but crashes for Fedora core 9 )
telzur@gtz2:~> snx -s vpn.bgu.ac.il -u username@vpn
then provide your PIN and the Secure-ID code.

Step 2: Connect to the Windows terminal server using remote-desktop:

UNICORE is a vertically integrated Grid middleware, which provides a seamless, secure, and intuitive access to distributed resources and data and provides components on all levels of a Grid architecture from an easy-to-use graphical client down to the interfaces to the Grid resources. Furthermore, UNICORE has a strong support for workflows while security is established through X.509 certificates. Since 2002 UNICORE is continuously improved to mature production ready quality and enhanced with more functionalities in several European projects. Today UNICORE is used in several national and international Grid infrastructures like D-Grid and DEISA and is also providing access to the national Supercomputer of the NIC in Germany. The talk will give details about the new version of UNICORE 6, which is web-services enabled, OGSA-based and standards-compliant. To begin with the underlying design principles and concepts of UNICORE are presented. A detailed architecture diagram shows the different components of UNICORE 6 and its interdependencies. This is followed by a view on the adoption of common open standards in UNICORE 6, which allows interoperability with other Grid technologies and a realisation of an open and extensible architecture. The talk closes with some interesting examples, where the UNICORE Grid technology is used. Cloud Computing is here to stay

First trials with Xcerion XIOS/3 Beta.

A remote OS and applications consumed completely from the "Cloud". All you need is a Web Browser.

Xcerion looks cool although at the moment it works only on top of IE6+ and not yet on top of Firefox.
The response time is reasonable and the Windows Manager is nice and intuitive:

A thin client/OLPC and Xcerion can be an interesting cheap computing platform.

Cellular Automata - Part II, Using Condor

My post on Cellular Automata from January 12 was not put there by mistake. I want to use it as a starting point for a couple of exercises in my Parallel Processing course.
In that post I gave a few drawings that differ only by the generating rule number.

Today, I am going to show how using the Condor High-Throughput Computing system allows to handle in a very simple way large volume of computations.

I used this simple Condor submit file:

universe = vanilla
executable = nks.py
Error = err.$(Process)
Output= out.$(Process)
Log = log.$(Process)
Arguments = $(Process)
Queue 256

And was able to compute the whole set of 256 rules (jobs) with the same effort of computing a single rule.
I submitted the task to my Personal Condor on my laptop and was not disappointed; After a while I got all the outputs happily waiting for post processing.

A Framework for Binary Code Analysis and Static and Dynamic Patching

Tools that analyze and modify binary code are crucial to many areas of computer science, including cyber forensics, program tracing, debugging, testing, performance profiling, performance modeling, and software engineering. While there are many tools used to support these activities, these tools have significant limitations in functionality, efficiency, accuracy, portability, and availability.

To overcome these limitations, we are actively working on the design and implementation of a new framework for binary code analysis and modification. The goal of this framework is to provide a component architecture to support tools that analyze binary code and modify it both statically (binary rewriting) and dynamically (dynamic instrumentation), allow for interoperability of the static and dynamic code modification, and enable the sharing and leveraging of this complex technology.

Characteristics of this framework include:

* multi-architecture, multi-format, and multi-operating system;
* library-based, so that components can be used separately as needed;
* open source, to allow both local control and auditing;
* extensible data structures, so that new analyses and interfaces can be added easily;
* exportable data structures, so that all analysis products will be stored in a format that can be readily used by other tools;
* batch enabled, so that tools can operate effectively without interactive control;
* testable, with each separate component provided with a detailed test suite;
* accurate and efficient, using best-known current algorithms and the addition of new algorithms for code parsing;
* up to date, handling modern binary code idioms like exceptions, and functions with non-contiguous and shared code.

This component-based approach requires identifying key portable and multi-platform abstractions at every level of functionality. If we (as a community) are successful in transitioning to this model, we can break the "hero model" of tool development of having each group trying to produce its own end-to-end complete tool sets.

The Paradyn group is working on several initial library components of this effort, including symbol table parsers, binary code scanners (instruction decoders), binary code parsers (control flow analysis), dynamic code generators, stack walkers, process execution controllers, and a visual binary code editor.

The goal of this talk is to lay out the motivation, plans, and current progress for this project. We also hope to solicit feedback on both its design and functionality.

I recently bought Stephen Wolfram's book "New Kind of Science". The book is interesting and I highly recommend it.
In the spirit of one of my favorite phrases by Confucius:

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand" I decided to reproduce some of the first examples that are given in the book. I wrote about 100 lines of Python code and enjoyed the beauty of the results.
The whole book is available online and I am referring here to the plots on page 55. Below enclosed a few of my plots.

I followed the Hadoop Quickstart guide and the whole process is described below.

This post can be used as a reference for other people installing Hadoop.

My system is OpenSuse 10.3 and Java version is 1.6.0_03.

After downloading and installing the package I did the Standalone operation test:

To decrypt:
